What is an MCP?
A standard for AI tools.
The Model Context Protocol lets an AI assistant securely use external software. The clearspan MCP exposes our structural calculation tools to Claude so it can run and document calcs on your behalf, while you stay in control of every review and result.
- An open standard.
- MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard for connecting AI assistants to outside tools and data. Clearspan publishes its calculation engine as an MCP server, so Claude can call it the same way a person clicks a button in the app.
- Real math, not AI approximation.
- Give AI tested tools so that it does not need to perform the math itself. The clearspan MCP lets AI orchestrate calculation tools without the AI needing to develop the calculation and math itself.
- Saved to your workspace.
- Every project and calculation an agent creates over MCP shows up in your clearspan account immediately, ready for review, editing, or packaging into a report just like your manual work.
Local integration
Works where you already work.
Connect clearspan to Claude and it sits alongside the rest of your tools. Hand off work to the agent like you would an entry-level engineer, then open the results in clearspan to review and edit.
- Use your own Claude.
- Run the MCP from Claude Desktop with your own Anthropic account. Desktop usage runs on your Claude plan and does not count against your clearspan AI limits.
- Pair with your other tools.
- Because it is local, you can combine the clearspan MCP with other desktop MCP servers. Pull a span or load off a drawing with Bluebeam or Revit, then run the calc in clearspan in the same conversation.
- Or work entirely on the web.
- Prefer not to install anything? The same tools are available to the clearspan AI assistant on our website, with no additional setup required.
The toolset
Calculation tools Claude can call.
A few of the verified tools the agent can run for you. Each one writes back to your clearspan project, so you can check and edit every result it produces.
- Simple-span beam analysis
- Run analysis on simple span beams for arbitrary point and uniform loads. Manage load patterns, load combinations, and see results by load case.
- Wood beam capacity check
- Run the NDS wood beam capacity tool to check a sawn lumber or SCL section for bending, shear, and deflection limits.
- Wood post capacity check
- Check wood posts and columns for axial compression using NDS code. Link the post check to the reactions from your beam designs.
- Calculation compiling
- Bundle approved calculations and supporting PDFs into one report package with an auto-generated cover page, live table of contents, section organization, and unified page numbering.
Plus tools for projects, load criteria, tributary loads, and saving reports, with more on the way.
Privacy
Keep client data out of the AI model.
Concerned about what an AI assistant can see? Clearspan includes an optional identity-scrubbing mode for any project. When it’s on, the MCP redacts every identifying detail before the data reaches the model. The agent still gets the geometry, loads, and materials it needs to run the calc; it just never sees the details of the project the calc belongs to.
- Optional, per project.
- Scrubbing is off by default and you turn it on for the projects that need it. Sensitive jobs stay anonymized; everything else works exactly as before. Or set a company-wide privacy requirement.
- Identity never reaches the model.
- Client and project names, addresses, project numbers, and other identifying details are stripped before the MCP hands anything to Claude, so the AI works the calc without ever knowing whose project it is.
- The math is untouched.
- Spans, loads, materials, and DCRs pass through unchanged, so results and reports are identical either way. Calculations saved by the agent are reattached to the real project in your workspace.
Get connected
Connect easily, in minutes.
The remote MCP uses your clearspan login for authorization, with no API keys or config files.
- 1
Open your connector settings
In Claude on the web or desktop, go to Customize → Connectors, click "+", then "Add custom connector". (On individual Pro and Max plans, connectors live under Customize.)
- 2
Add the ClearSpan MCP URL
Paste https://mcp.withclearspan.com/mcp as the connector URL and connect.
- 3
Log in with ClearSpan
Sign in with your existing ClearSpan credentials. No API key to copy, just your normal login. Available to engineers and firm staff.
- 4
Start delegating
Ask Claude to find a project, run a beam, or compile a report. Everything it does appears in your ClearSpan workspace to review and edit.
